  5.  MAGGIE’sFIRST ” break in Integrating Golf came when she Petitioned Supervisor Kenneth Hahn to
     Stop Segregation on County Golf Courses.
  6.  MAGGIE has been called, the ” FIRST ” Lady of Golf in Southern California.
  7.  As Director of Jack Thompson Golf Course, Maggie Hired the ” FIRST ” Female and the ” FIRST ” Hispanic, Golf Starters.
  8.  Renaming the Jack Thompson Golf Course, to the ” Maggie Hathaway Golf Course “, marked the
    FIRST ” Time in Los Angeles County History, that a Golf Course of ” Any Size “, had been named after an African American Woman.

1.   Maggie always envisioned that her Legacy and Voice, would be carried on by her family. 
2.   When Maggie’s health began to  deteriorate, Maggie chose her only grandson,
      Mr. Dwain Lewis, to uphold her Legacy.
3.   From 1980 to 2000, Maggie mentored Dwain Lewis to establish and manage a
     ” Foundation Corporation ” in her name,
      3.1.    Ensuring that her Accomplishments, Achievements, History and Contributions to Golf,
                 would continue through Mr. Lewis  Leadership, and not Erased nor Forgotten.

IN THE BEGINNING.  HOW MAGGIE STARTED GOLFING.

Joe Louis, Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Maggie.

1.  When as a Sports Columnist for the Los Angeles Sentinel, Maggie was assigned to cover, Joe Louis, a good golfer and Ex-Heavyweight
      Boxing Champion, at the Griffith Park Golf Course.

2.  Maggie hit her ” FIRST ” Golf Shot, in 1955, with Boxing Champion Joe Louis, watching.  Maggie was on Target, ever since.

3.  Joe made a friendly Golf Bet with Maggie, who had Never Hit a Golf Ball, in her life.  Joe missed hitting the green and bet Maggie, that
       she couldn’t hit the green.  

4.  Maggie won the friendly Golf Bet with Joe, and later, Maggie became a Champion Golfer.  The rest was History.

Supv. Kenneth Hahn,  Maggie,  and  Jim Brown.

1.  Maggie spoke with Jim Brown and told him she was having trouble getting the Press and Blacks, at her Protest, at Western Ave. Golf Course.
      1.1  Jim told Maggie, he would make sure the Press covered her Protest, because he was going to, Join Maggie’s cause.
      1.2   Once Jim joined Maggie, the Press appeared and Blacks joined her Protest.

2.  Jim said, Maggie became his Personal Hero and a very Dear Friend.

1.  Maggie’s First Break in Integration at Western Ave. Golf Course and County Golf Courses came when,
     1.1  Maggie petitioned Supervisor Kenneth Hahn to Stop Segregation on County Courses.

2.  It was an ” Eight Year ” Battle, that crowned  Maggie’s Victory after an up-hill fight.

3.  Maggie made it Possible for;
     3.1  African Americans to Work in Golf Clubs
     3.2  Work in Golf Shops, and, 
     3.3  Work at Golf Tournaments.

4.  Maggie’s battles against the Western Avenue Golf Course and the Western Avenue’s Women Club, resulted in the;
     4.1  Board of Supervisors Ruling an End to Segregation in All County Golf Clubs.

  1.  L. A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, and Maggie are standing in front of the Sign, that’s posted on the ” Junior Golfers Green “,

2.  Supervisor Hahn appointed Maggie to a Commissionership, then he had, a ” $12,000,  ” Junior Putting Green “, built at

3.  After Maggie had battled for years against Western Ave. Golf Course, Maggie was Honored with a Juniors Golfers Green.

  1.   In 1962, Maggie, a Local Golf Legend and Civil Rights Activist, Organized an NAACP Protest against the
      Former Fox Hills Golf Course
    , for; 
      1.1   Not allowing African Americans to play on their Golf Course and the struggle Blacks went through to play Golf,
               in the
    City of Los Angeles.

2.  Maggie’s message was simple, ” Discrimination In Golf “,,, Must Go!

3.  Maggie’s Picket Line Destroyed the Fox Hills Golf Club. Home Savings, who owned the Golf Course, ended up building
     apartments on the land of the Golf Course.

4.  Maggie Fought for Civil Rights on Golf Courses, and on Movie Lots of Southern California, for more than 40 years.

2.   Maggie was Denied Membership into the ” Western Ave. Women’s Club “, [ an all-white club ] because of her Color.
       2.1   Maggie took her concerns to the County of Los Angeles.
       2.2    L.A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn helped Maggie, Tear Down, the Walls of,
       2.3    Racism, that had been built around the same ” Western Women’s Club “, and Public Golf Courses as well.

3.   Maggie Sued the Larger Golf Association and eventually Won that suit and continued to Fight against
       All Forms of Discrimination

4.   After a long battle, Maggie eventually became the President of the Reformed, ” Western Avenue Women’s Club “.

MAGGIE AND THE;  ” VERONDALE  WOMEN’s  GOLF  CLUB “.

  1.   Maggie and L.A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn were dear friends.

2.   After Maggie’s meetings with Western Avenue Officials proved futile, Maggie,
       2.1   Took her concerns to Supervisor Hahn, who,
       2.2   Closed the Club’s doors on the Racist Management, then,
       2.3   Reopened then for Maggie, in 1959,
       2.4   As the New President of the ” Western Avenue Women’s County Club.

3.   Maggie with the help of Supervisor Hahn, Changed the Rules, to;
       3.1   Let Blacks and Minorities have Access to Golf Facilities, and,
       3.2   Aided Maggie to Tear Down the Walls of,
       3.3   Racism, and Jim Crow Actions that had been built around Western Ave. Golf Course
                [ renamed to the Chester Washington Golf Course ] and Public Courses as well.

4.   After Maggie was shot at, by a Gang member, for;   
      4.1   Defending her Hispanic Starter at Jack Thompson Golf Course,
      4.2   Supervisor Hahn saw to it that there was a,   
      4.3   Police presence on the grounds of Jessie Owens Park [ located on Western Ave. and Century Blvd. ],
               at all times.

MAGGIE’s;  ” MAG ”  ORGANIZATION.

Maggie  Hathaway.

  1.   Maggie was a Founder and Director, of the  ” Minority Associated Golfers “, also known as,  ” MAG “.

2.    Maggie’s  ” MAG ” Organization Sponsored Junior Golf Programs to Teach,
        2.1   Underprivileged Children of all Races, to play Golf.

3.   Maggie’s,  MAG Organization ” conducted, 10-Week Summer Youth Golf Programs “.

4.   Maggie’s  MAG Organization, often Graduated ”  70  to  100+ ” children, from her Youth Golf Program on a yearly basis.

5.   Maggie’s  MAG  Organization, organized in Watts, at Will Rogers Park, in the early 1960s.

6.    Jim Brown said, ” the Only Difference between Maggie and,

        6.3   Maggie Never got the Public Credit she deserved, especially for what,

1.   Maggie was a Champion of Civil Rights and Junior Golfers Programs, on the Golf Course.

2.   Maggie was a Pioneer in Organizing Junior Golf Programs in the Inner City.

3.   Maggie would often take her Junior Golfers on a field trip, to visit Supervisor Kenneth Hahn in his office,
       so they could,
       3.1    Experience life outside of the Inner City.

4.   During a two-year period, Maggie’s ” MAG “ Organization received Funds from the County Board of Supervisors,
      for her Junior Golfers Program.

1.   Maggie, the Wonder Woman of Civil Rights for Golfers, enjoyed more Honors, on March 30, 2000.

2.   On March 30, 2000, the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, along with Councilman Mark Ridley Thomas,
      2.1    Dedicated Maggie, with the;  ” Hathaway  Greens “.
      2.2   Two gorgeous ” Putting Greens ” at the Jim Gilliam Recreation Complex, located at, 4000 S. LaBrea Ave, Los Angeles, Ca.

3.  This made Maggie, the ” FIRST ”  to have a ” Putting Greens, in the Inner City of Los Angeles,
      3.1  The  ” FIRST ” to have a  ” Putting Green “, at a City Recreation Center, making Golf available to Urban Youth. 

4.   The Legendary Maggie Hathaway gave Golf Clinics at her new ” Hathaway Greens “, and was a Golf Instructor for her Clinics.

5.   In the 1960’s, Maggie had been vitally instrumental in Bringing Golf to the African American and Minority Community.

6.   Maggie only charged a ” $5.00 “, Registration Fee, for her Golf Clinics.
