- Maggie always envisioned that her Legacy and Voice, would be carried on by her family. When Maggie’s health began to deteriorate, Maggie chose her only grandson, Mr. Dwain Lewis, to uphold her Legacy.
- From 1980 to 2000, Maggie mentored Dwain Lewis to establish and manage a ” Foundation Corporation ” in her name, Ensuring that her Voice, Visions, Values and Legacy, would continue through his leadership and not Forgotten.

- Included in Maggie’s grandsons’ roles, will be as a Reporter. Maggie passed down some of her skills as a 30 Year Reporter for the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper, to Mr. Lewis.
- Mr. Lewis will provide the Viewers of this Website with pertinent information about the progress of Maggie’s Legacy and Mr. Lewis Proposed Implementations of Maggie’s, Voice, Dreams and Wishes, Reflected and Displayed, at her Golf Course during the Renovation Project, and at Chester Washington Golf Course.
- In 2024, Mr Lewis has actively reached out to numerous individuals and organizations, etc., involved in the Renovation Project at her Golf Course, to seek their assistance, inclusion and support, to Implement Mr. Lewis Proposals, of Maggie’s Voice, Dreams and Wishes, at her Golf Course, and at Chester Washington Golf Course.

The wonderful game of Golf knows no color lines. Golf should be enjoyed by everyone without discrimination or segregation.
Have an unwavering passion for mentoring children, guiding them through their formative years with a steadfast belief in their potential. Assist them in setting ambitions goals and encouraging them to believe in their own abilities.
Seniors and Veterans are a vital part of our society and should be encouraged to participate in golf, with full access to all golf courses, without facing exclusion due to race, creed, color, sex, or Economic status.
All individuals should have the opportunity to access and play at; all Golf Courses, be welcomed in all Golf Pro Shops, Organize Minority Golf Programs and Equal Job Opportunities at all Golf Courses for Minorities.
MISSION
This is a photo of Maggie taking her ” All Latino ” Junior Golfers, on a Field Trip to City Hall.
These Junior Golfers won several Jr. Golf Tournaments.
On occasions, Maggie would take her Junior Golfers on Field Trips to City Hall, to meet, L. A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn.
- Maggie has Empowered her Grandson to continue her; History, Legacy, and Mission that She Set Forth,,, Herself.
- Establish Junior Golf Programs, Senior Golf Programs, Veteran Programs, in Low-Income Communities.
- Provide Children with the Opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of Golf, regardless of Financial Barriers and Ensuring they are not turned away, due to the inability to Afford Golf Equipment and Golf Fees.
- Special Attention aimed at Improving the Health of Senior Citizens, by playing Golf as well as lifting their Spirits, by providing them opportunities to engage in Golfing Events across their City, which provides them with a reprieve from their daily routines.
- Ensure that All Lower-Income Children, Seniors and Veterans, regardless of Economic Status, Race, Creed, nor Color,,, have Equal Opportunities to learn and enjoy the enriching game of Golf.

- Infuse the Fabulous World of Golf into, Inner-City After School Programs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Recreational Parks & Facilities,,, and beyond.
- Integrate Golf into Senior Citizen Programs and Veteran Programs. Golfing will improve their Health and Well-Being.
- Provide Juniors, Seniors, & Veterans, opportunities to visit and participate at Golf Courses, Recreational Parks, beyond their Local Surroundings. This initiative aims to Inspire, Motivate and Reassure are Seniors & Veterans of their continued Vitality and Importance, within Society.
- Establish inclusive Outreach Programs tailored for the Children, Seniors and Veterans. We will begin in the Communities where Maggie’s Influence was Profound, and aim to expand Maggie’s Initiatives, to encompass other Urban Areas.
Maggie’s Enduring History and Legacy, has been Celebrated and Promoted by Various means, such as; Fundraising Events, Award Ceremonies, Social Media, Book Publications, Documentaries, Movies and Museum Displays, Showcasing Maggie’s Impactful History, Extend her Out-Reach Far and Wide.

- Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe Louis enjoyed Golfing. As a Reporter for the L.A. Sentinel Newspaper at that time, Maggie covered Joe Louis while he was in town golfing.
- Although Maggie had Never played Gold before,,, Maggie bravely accepted a gentleman’s bet with Joe Louis. Joe Louis teed off and did not hit the green. With determination, Maggie placed the Golf Ball on the Tee, swung the Golf Club with all her might and astonishingly managed to hit the green. Maggie emerged Victorious and won the gentleman’s bet with Joe. Louis.
- As a result of Maggie winning the gentlemen’s bet, Joe Louis graciously rewarded Maggie with a Golf Bag, a Set of Golf Clubs and Invaluable Golf Lessons. From that moment forward,,, Maggie’s Journey into the world of Golf began,,, and the Rest became Documented History!

- Maggie organized ” M.A.G. “, which stands for ” Minority Associated Golfers. Ironically, these are the First three Letters of Maggie’s name.
- These women were not only Officers in M.A.G., but they were also part of Maggie’s Women Golfers, at Western Ave. Golf Course, which was later renamed to, Chester Washington Golf Course.

Maggie Hathaway’s grandson, Mr. Dwain Lewis, President and Co-Founder of the ” Maggie Hathaway Foundation Corporation “, has reached out to the following individuals and organizations, to request Inclusion and to be a contributor in the, Renovation Project at his grandmother’s golf course;
- L.A. County Supervisors,
- The SCGA [ Southern California Golf Association ],
- The L.A. Country Club, and
- The L.A. County Parks & Recreation.
Were reaching out to them, in order to be included and to be a part of, the Renovation Project at Maggie Hathaway’s Golf Course. The goal is to help showcase and reflect Maggie Hathaway’s rich history and enduring legacy during the renovation phase. Mr. Lewis, who holds exclusive access to numerous never-before-seen photos, awards, trophies, and other memorabilia of Maggie, is committed to preserving and truly celebrating Maggie’s significant contributions, that would greatly please,,, Maggie.
Thus far, we have been working closely with the L. A. County Parks & Recreation, to incorporate several elements at her current golf course, that reflects Maggie Hathaway’s legacy, to include, 2 Bulletin Boards featuring Maggie Hathaway. Mr. Lewis also proposed that ” his ” photo of Maggie’s ” Iconic Golf Swing ” [ which serves as the Logo for Maggie’s Corporation ] be Displayed alongside of her name, on the building’s existing logo. This addition provides patrons with a visual representation of who Maggie Hathaway was. We are grateful to the L. A. County Parks & Recreation, for embracing our proposal, and we are pleased to announce that Maggie’s Iconic Golf Swing, has been included on the current buildings Logo.

- The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation has Stepped-Up and collaborated with Mr. Lewis to Showcase some of Maggie Hathaway’s History and Legacy, at her Golf Course. Their efforts include displaying a few elements that celebrate Maggie’s Remarkable Contributions and Enduring Impact, on Golf.
- The L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation accepted several of Maggie Hathaway’s Proposals, which were presented by Mr. Lewis, and has swiftly implemented them. These proposals by Mr. Lewis, included the Installation of Two New Bulletin Boards and a New Logo at the entrance of Maggie’s Golf Course, featuring an Image of, Maggie’s Iconic Golf Swing.

- In the Mid 50’s, Maggie’s Focus shifted to the Western Avenue Golf Club, a Public Club that had a Private Racist Management at the time.
- Maggie Formed her; ” MAG ” [ stands for; Minority Associated Golfers ] Association, which through Picketing and other Forms of Pressure, made it possible for Blacks to work in, Pro Shops, Participate in Celebrity Tournaments and Work in formerly All-White Positions.
- After Maggie Founded MAG, she set her eyes on the prize of, Desegregating Public Golf Courses and Golf Clubs in Los Angeles.
- In 1964, Maggie and her MAG Association, Picketed the Fox Hills Golf Course, until it admitted Black Members.
- Maggie was accompanied by, L. A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, the Jackson 5, her Sister, MAG Members and others, when Maggie cut the Ribbon at Chester Washington Golf Course, for the 1st Juniors Putting Green, that was Dedicated to Maggie & her MAG Association.

- Many called Maggie, the; ” Wonder Woman “…. of Civil Rights for Golf.
- In the 1960’s, Maggie was Vitally Instrumental in bring Golf to the African American Community.
- One day Maggie was visiting the Jim Gilliam Recreation Complex, and notice that many of the children at the Recreation Complex were Tiger Wood Fans, however, they did not understand Golf. Maggie went to her Councilman and to the Department of Parks and Recreation with a Plan. The Results was, the; ” Hathaway Greens “.
- On March 30, 2000, Maggie received another Honor. The City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, along with L. A. Councilman Thomas, Created and Dedicated the; ” Hathaway Greens “,,, to Maggie.
- Maggie’s ” Hathaway Greens ” is located at the Jim Gilliam Recreation Complex,,, 4000 S. Labrea Ave., Los Angeles Ca.
- Maggie created, Programs and Clinics at her ” Hathaway Greens “. Maggie was a Golf Instructor for the Children, Adults, Seniors and Veterans.
- Maggie Hathaway has made History Again,,, as a Minority Female,,, with a ” Three-Par Golf Course ” and a ” Putting Green “,,, named in her Honor.

- When Maggie became the Branch’s first President, she had a big job ahead of her, fighting Discrimination throughout the Entertainment Industry. Maggie set out to accomplish big goals she had.
- Maggie succeeded in getting Black stuntmen, women producers, directors, photographers, cameramen, hair dressers, publicists, and others behind the camera,,, jobs.
- Maggie became a Champion Golfer and that fight as well, was bitter and long. After Maggie won her fight against the County to Desegregate County Golf Courses, Dinah Shore Colgate Pro-Am Tournament extended Maggie an invitation to enter the Tournament. Maggie was the first Black Female in their Palm Springs Golf Tourney.
- Maggie also became a W.P.L.A. Golf Member and the First Black Scorer in the L. A. Open. Maggie then became the Golf Editor of the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper.

- Maggie joins Jim Brown as Jim was accompanied by 30 prominent prominent athletes to Marshall County Mississippi, to Feed and Inspire Minority Youth in America’s reportedly poorest Country.
- The Core of Maggie and Jim Brown’s Civil Activism, wasn’t asking for anything special, merely to be able to Exercise their Constitutional Rights as Tax Paying Citizens.
- Jim Brown said,,, ” Maggie became his Hero and a Very Dear Friend “. Jim Brown also said,,, ” He knew most of the Great Civil Rights Figures very well and the only difference between, Maggie Hathaway and Martin or Rosa Parks, or Malcom X, was that Maggie worked almost anonymously behind the scenes to empower people and Never got the Public Credit she Richly Deserved,,, especially for what she did,,, In and for Golf.

- Western Ave. Golf Course was a Public Facility being operated by the County, that excluded anyone who wasn’t white. Maggie was the First one to correct this Injustice through the Courts.
- Maggie’s Contributions to Golf as a Trailblazing Minority Female, should Never be Forgotten and must be carried forward. In order to move Maggie’s Contributions to Golf Forward, Maggie created her own; ” Maggie Hathaway Foundation Corporation.
- Maggie closed one Interview by saying; “… I don’t know of any Minority Woman in America,,,, Who has a Golf Course named after them “, as Maggie does.

- The photo above was taken in 1991, showing Maggie being Honored with a Sculpture of Maggie, which was located in the Hawthorne Mall, in Hawthorne Ca. Her Sculpture reached as high as the 2nd Level of the Mall.
- Maggie received this Honor for her Accomplishments in Golf, such as; Desegregating Golf Courses, Entrance for Minorities into Pro Golf Shops and Golf Club Houses, as well as Opening Job Opportunities for Minorities, at Golf Courses.
- Maggie’s additional Historic Accomplishments,,, are far too many to list, but include her Passion for Mentoring Young Children and preparing them to succeed in life. - Maggie reported on Golf for more than 3 Decades as a Golf Columnist for the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper & wrote a Column called; ” Tee Times”. In 1975, Maggie made History again, by becoming the First Black Woman Reporter, to cover the Masters Golf Tournament.

- Maggie Hathaway was a long time Community and Civil Rights Activist. Maggie was known throughout the Nation as a formidable Champion for Justice and a Pioneering Legend for Social Activism.

- Maggie was denied membership in the Western Ave. Women’s Golf Club because of her color. Maggie met with Western Avenue Officials, that turned out to be, futile.
- Maggie took her concerns to the County, where she was helped by the late Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, to tear down the walls of Racism that had been built around the Western Ave. Women’s Golf Club, and the public golf course as well.
- Supervisor Hahn eventually closed Western Ave. and Re-opened it a year later with a New and more enlightened management, and eventually a new name,,, Chester Washington Golf Course. Supervisor Hahn also Opened the former racist management doors of the Club, to Maggie, who was still being denied.

- Years after Demonstrations, Picketing and Law Suits, by Maggie, against Discriminatory Practices at Western Ave. Golf Course [ renamed to Chester Washington Golf Course ], Maggie was Honored with a ” Junior Golfers Green “, which was dedicated to Maggie’s,,, Minority Associated Golfers Organization, also known as,,, MAG, as illustrated on the Sign, in the Photo above.
- As time passed, the County of Los Angeles renamed a nine-hole par 3 Golf Course in Jessie Owens Park, after Maggie, where she had worked as a starter. Maggie said her only regret was that her Champion, Kenneth Hahn had passed away two weeks prior to the dedication of her 9 Hole Golf Course.
- In the 1960’s, Maggie was vitally instrumental in bringing Golf, to the African American Community. Drive like Maggie’s forced Golf Clubs to end their Discriminatory Practices.

Maggie Hathaway holds a Special place in my heart because the Golf Course named in her Honor is where I first learned the basics of the Golf game. The Maggie Hathaway Golf Course is an ideal starting point for beginners in the area, offering not just instruction but a deep connection to Maggie Hathaway’s Legacy. Maggie’s advocacy for diversity in Golf, inspires me as a minority woman and encourages me to pursue the sport with confidence wherever I go.
Why I Chose to Celebrate Maggie Hathaway at My Gala Event.
In addition to honoring the dedicated youth from inner-city communities who invest their time and effort into learning Golf, I wanted to Highlight Maggie Hathaway’s significant contributions and her impact on the sport. It is crucial for these young athletes, who spend countless hours practicing and playing at this historically rich Golf Course, to understand who Maggie Hathaway was and the profound influences she had on the Golfing World.
- 2024, Ms. Robin Cole Organized and Presented a First Class, Marvelous Event, Celebrating and Recognizing Maggie Hathaway, in Los Angeles, Ca.
- This Gala Event focused on all the Children Golfers that were present, who were able to enjoy hearing and learning some of Maggie Hathaway’s History and Maggie’s Pioneering Involvement, with Children Golfers and Children Golf Programs.
