Maggie  Hathaway

  • In 1962, Maggie started this Branch, with just $4.00 dollars’ worth of stamps and a burning determination to right the wrongs, in Society and on Golf Courses.

  • When Maggie became the Branch’s first President in 1962, she had a big job ahead of her, fighting Discrimination throughout the Entertainment Industry.  Maggie set out to accomplish big goals she had.

  • Maggie succeeded in getting Black stuntmen, women producers, directors, photographers, cameramen, hair dressers, publicists, and others behind the camera,,, jobs.

  • During this time, Malcolm X came into Maggie’s life.  Maggie was a court reporter and had a chance to sit with Malcolm X, for nine months.  Maggie also met Martin Luther King, Jr. and also followed the Medgar Evers injustice.  Maggie noted that all three men’s first name,,, began with the letter ” M’.  All 3 men, fought for Freedom, as Maggie did.

  • Maggie left the NAACP Presidency to become a Champion Golfer and that fight as well, was bitter and long.  After Maggie won her fight against the County to Desegregate County Golf Courses, Dinah Shore Colgate Pro-Am Tournament extended Maggie an invitation to enter the Tournament.  Maggie was the first Black Female in their Palm Springs Golf Tourney.

  • Maggie also became a W.P.L.A. Golf Member and the First Black Scorer in the L. A. Open.  Maggie then became the Golf Editor of the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper.
