Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe Louis enjoyed Golfing. As a reporter for the L.A. Sentinel Newspaper at that time, Maggie covered Joe Louis while he was in town for a Golfing Tournament.
Although Maggie had never played Golf before, she bravely accepted a gentleman’s bet with Boxing Champ Joe Louis. Joe Louis teed off, and did not hit the green.
With determination, Maggie placed the ball on the tee, swung the golf club with all might, and astonishingly managed to hit the green. Maggie had never swung a golf club before. Maggie emerged victorious and won the gentleman’s bet.
As a result of Maggie winning the bet, Joe Louis graciously rewarded Maggie with a golf bag, a set of golf clubs, and invaluable golf lessons. From that moment on, Maggie’s journey into the world of golf began, and the rest became history.
